Pacific Hurricane Season in Otay Mesa?
5/17/2022 (Permalink)
Our local team in Otay Mesa and San Ysidro responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in San Diego County. The Pacific hurricane season beings on May 15 each year and ends on November 30. Only one Pacific hurricane (or tropical cyclone) ever came close to hitting landfall in Southern California. Seven tropical cyclones have brought gale-force winds to the Southwestern United States. In most cases, we experienced tropical storms resulting from the downgraded hurricanes.
1858 – San Diego hurricane
1939 – Long Beach tropical storm that made landfall near San Pedro
1939 – San Pedro, remnants of Tropical Storm Jennifer-Katherine
1963 – Hurricane Emily, downgraded to a tropical storm
1965 – Hurricane Joanne, downgraded to a tropical storm
1972 – Hurricane Kathleen, downgraded to a tropical storm
1976 – Hurricane Nora, downgraded to a tropical storm
Heavy rain was the only effect of most of these cyclones. The exception was Hurricane Kathleen, which caused flooding and devastation in Ocotillo, California, killing several people.
