Flash Flooding in Otay Mesa?
10/3/2022 (Permalink)
Do you know what to do if a flash flood warning is issued? Our Otay Mesa and San Ysidro teams want everyone to be prepared in case a flash flood happens. Here is some information from the National Weather Service:
- Most flash floods are caused by slow-moving thunderstorms that repeatedly move over the same area or heavy rains from tropical storms and hurricanes
- These floods can develop within minutes or hours depending on the intensity and duration of the rain, the topography, soil conditions, and ground cover
- Flash floods can roll boulders, tear out trees, destroy buildings and bridges, and scour out new channels
- Flash flooding can trigger catastrophic mudslides
Flood Condition Driving Safety Rules
- Avoid already flooded and high-velocity flow areas. Do not attempt to cross flowing streams. If you enter a flowing stream and the water gets above your knee, TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.
- Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams and washes, particularly during threatening conditions
- If floodwaters rise around your car, but the water is not moving, abandon the car and move to higher ground. Do not leave the vehicle and enter the moving water.
