Can My Plumbing Pipes in Otay Mesa Freeze this Winter?
1/3/2023 (Permalink)
Our Otay Mesa and San Ysidro teams are trained and certified to restore storm damage, no matter how big the job is! Temperatures in San Diego have dropped below freezing, although it is a rare occurrence. In December 1967, snow fell in San Diego, and it has not snowed since, and on January 7, 1913, the record low temperature was 25 degrees Fahrenheit, well below freezing.
The American Red Cross website explains that when pipes freeze, the water expands and can put tremendous pressure on metal and plastic pipes.
Pipes that freeze most frequently are:
- Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines
- Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets
- Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation
How can I tell if a pipe has frozen?
If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Keep the faucet open and apply heat to the frozen section by:
- Wrap an electronic heating pad around the pipe
- Heat the area with a hair dryer
- Use towels soaked in hot water
