Heavy Rain Causes Flooding in San Ysidro from the Overflowing Tijuana River?

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and water damage to many parts of San Diego County. Earlier in the year, Channel 7 News San Diego reported flooding in San Ysidro and other parts of the County. A road next to the Tijuana River was under 4 feet of water, causing vehicles to stall and requiring swift water rescue crews to respond to help a woman trapped inside her SUV caught on the road.
Our local Otay Mesa/San Ysidro teams have responded to many storm damage emergencies as many areas of San Diego experienced flooding and storm damage from several powerful storms that have impacted us. Protecting your home from flash flooding in advance of a big storm involves taking a combination of preventive measures and emergency preparedness steps. Here are some actions you can take:
Stay Informed: Keep track of weather forecasts and flood warnings from trusted sources, such as the National Weather Service or local authorities. Sign up for emergency alerts if available in your area.
Store Important Items: If you live in a flood-prone area, elevate valuable possessions and important documents to higher levels of your home or consider storing them offsite.
Install Sump Pumps: If you are one of the rare homes in San Deigo County that has a basement, a sump pump can help remove water from your basement or crawl space during flooding. Make sure it is in good working condition and has a backup power source.
Seal Vulnerable Points: Use waterproof sealants on foundation walls, windows, doors, and other potential entry points for water. Consider installing flood barriers or flood shields for doors and windows.
Elevate Utilities: Raise electrical panels, switches, sockets, and heating systems above the expected flood level to prevent water damage.
Anchor Fuel Tanks: If you have an outdoor fuel tank, securely anchor it to prevent it from floating away during flooding.
Landscape Management: Ensure your yard is properly graded away from your home, directing water flow away from the foundation. Consider installing French drains or swales to divert water.
Rain Gutters and Downspouts: Keep your gutters and downspouts clear of debris to allow for proper drainage. Consider installing extensions to direct water further away from your home's foundation.
Backup Power: Invest in a generator to ensure you have power during a storm-related outage. This can help operate other essential equipment.
